Black Forest Cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte)
A classic German dessert featuring layers of chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream, cherries, and Kirsch liqueur.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.

Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread half of the whipped cream over the cake and top with half of the cherries.

Drizzle half of the Kirsch liqueur over the cherries. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the layers of cream, cherries, and Kirsch.

Garnish with chocolate shavings. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
